Figural Work
2011 - 2012
The figure has been a powerful symbol and charged subject since antiquity and has set the standard for the creation of art since, acting as a vehicle to answer some of life’s most challenging questions. I believe that as human beings, it is primal for us to recreate and imitate in order for us to understand ourselves and the world we inhabit. It is through oil paint on canvas that I am able to translate emotion and capture aspects of the human condition that otherwise lay trapped behind one’s eyes or the “windows to our souls”.
My figural work is heavily reliant on its large scale, as I believe the scale allows the viewer to connect with the subject on a more personal level. Furthermore, I capture a strong sense of light through a series of luminous color combinations and a variety of glazes guiding the viewer aroundthe painting to its most expressive and telling components. Apart from their large size and strong sense of light, I place great emphasis on brush stroke, as it is a direct mark connecting both artist and subject. It is through stroke that great figurative masters like Edouard Manet and John Singer Sargent, who I look to for inspiration, achieved lively portrayals of their subjects. Lastly, I explore gesture and flow through mybackgrounds as it visually communicates my feelings towards the subject and his/her condition.
